The Wharf Fish Shop (Seafood/Takeaways)

The fish shop located prominently on Shortland Wharf has been a Thames Icon for the last 15 years. The wharf was built in 1868, one of five in the Thames area, and it is the only one still remaining. The fish shop started as a fish wholesaler that offered a selection of fresh fish and related seafood products from the front of the building which still exists today. Years later the addition of delicious takeaways was added. The retail shop is popular with locals and travellers alike, and is well known for its selection of fresh fish and array of seafood products; including fillets, oysters, kinas, mutton-birds, mussels and a selection of smoked fish. With ample room for parking with a boat in tow; a variety of bait and bulk salt ice is also available on site.

Fish & Chips

The Wharf offers fresh fish n chips that can be ordered at the fish shop and enjoyed on the outside BBQ tables overlooking the water and Marina area. Alternatively, the fish n chips can be eaten in the licenced cafe next door, a quaint little cafe that was established for exactly that purpose. All in all, a visit to Thames is not complete without stopping in at Shortland Wharf.

The Wharf Cafe

The Wharf Cafe: Located adjacent to The Wharf fish and takeaways shop but it’s the same business. This rustic little cafe started its humble beginnings as a small cool store that was converted to become a licenced cafe to compliment the inclusion of fish n chips next door. The vision of enjoying a meal of fresh fish n chips with a cold beer and a nice glass of wine while overlooking the water was the focus of its creation. There is indoor seating, an outdoor covered area as well as BBQ tables situated on the wharf which gives it an iconic kiwi feel. As well as enjoying your fish n chips here, the Wharf cafe offers great coffee, cabinet food, an infamous mussel chowder, and a selection of cold drinks. It also offers a nice range of beers, pre-mixes and good wine all at reasonable prices. The Wharf Cafe is the only establishment in Thames with water views. It’s a winning combination – Good Food, Great Coffee and a Stunning Location.
